U.S. online shoppers surveyed across 2026
abandoned a cart over delivery date doubt
more likely to buy when shown a specific date
Peak 2026 is already live, and the National Retail Federation expects $1.013 trillion in U.S. holiday retail sales across November and December. This report draws on three Locus consumer surveys conducted across 2026, including the inaugural Holiday Delivery Confidence Index, to benchmark what peak season shoppers now expect and where retailers are losing revenue before checkout.
Key Takeaways from the Report
Cart Abandonment is a Delivery Metric, Not a Checkout Metric
54% of U.S. shoppers have abandoned a cart in the past 12 months because they were not sure the order would arrive in time, rising to 71% among Gen Z. This loss never appears in late delivery data or WISMO volume, because the order was never placed. Delivery performance is being judged before checkout, not after it.
Certainty Outsells Speed by Five to One
When choosing where to buy a holiday gift, 40% of shoppers rank certainty that the order arrives by the promised date as their top factor. Just 8% rank fastest available delivery. Speed has become the floor rather than the differentiator, which means networks tuned purely for transit time are optimizing the wrong variable.
Delivery Certainty Has an Attach Rate
37% of shoppers paid extra for delivery by a specific date last holiday season, and a further 23% considered paying and found no option to buy. At scale, a guaranteed date is not only a cost to absorb. It is a revenue line most retailers have not priced, and the demand for it is already measurable.
Peak's Grace Period is Closing
The share of shoppers expecting holiday shipping to be faster than the rest of the year rose nine points between Q1 and Q4 2026, while the share expecting it to be slower barely moved. Seasonal allowance is thinning each quarter. Peak volume is no longer accepted as an explanation for a missed date.
